CarpSlam2013 Fund Raiser Results

The real reason for the Denver Trout Unlimited Carp Slam is to mobilize those that believe in the restoration of the aquatic habitat of the Denver South Platte. Their fund raising efforts provide the seed money that is used by DTU to help get restoration projects going. For example;

At South Platte Park, DTU dispersed $10,000 of your families’, friends and your own money toward about a half a million dollar project, but the first of that money was spent to commission a study and preliminary plan from ERC that NOBODY was asking for. That plan was a vision that our collective efforts sold and which led to phase one being completed this year. We have just signed a letter of support for South Suburban Parks and Recreation because they are so on-board that they hope to complete the remaining phases by the end of 2013. I have personally caught multiple trout in the ‘new’ water.

The really big budget belongs to the City of Denver/Greenway Foundation’s RISO project; $4 million plus some. About $2 million dollars of the funding for this project came from the Shattuck Superfund Trust and another $3 million or so from a GOCO grant. One chunk from a bad company and another from Lottery Ticket proceeds; neither of which represents the opinion of any single individual or group. On the other hand, the $25,000 that DTU allocated from your money represents your expectations of what Urban South Platte River enhancement should be. That contribution ensured that sport fishers and river lovers had an immensely influential voice.

We contributed $13,000 toward the rehabilitation of Overland Pond which borders the Denver South Platte as a “Gateway Fishery” for youth programs. This project has also recently finished providing a better habitat for fish appropriate for the pond.

Here is the result from some incredibly committed and dedicated fund raisers. Doug Long the two time winner of this event won a Nautilus FWX 7/8 reel donated by Trout’s Fly Fishing.

Donations totaled $ 9,219.21 beating the previous record last year of $8,518.96. Second place went to Will Rice who ran a tough campaign only to be nipped at the wire by Doug’s incredible network. Honorable mention goes to Stoney, the homeless stone fly who raised $302, enough to get him into the tournament if he hadn’t been pre-classified as a professional since he spends his time in the water as a livelihood.
