Carp Slam V winners are Trevor Tanner and Clint Packo.

Conditions were perfect with a 180 cfs flow in the Urban South Platte, clear water for sight fishing, and hungry feeding carp. Seven of 16 teams scored cyprinus carpio (Common Carp), and seven of 16 teams scored non-carp (trout, bass, walleye). Competitors were unsuccessful on only 2 of the 16 beats. Beats were lettered from the A at 104th Ave to P at Oxford Street. A late beat change to a huge River North beat divided it in half. Only beat C and N yielded only skunks. Approximately 32 fish were caught by the 32 competitors.

Pro Clint Packo gave amateur, but carp obsessed, Trevor Tanner credit for their victory. “When we switched to Trevor’s McTage’s Trouser Worm we just started knocked ‘em out of the park.”

Trevor said, “Listen, we hooked a lot of fish. We landed 4 of 17 hookups in the afternoon fishing at Confluence Park, just outside of Starbucks and REI.” All the competitors had similar stories. Luke Bever, fishing at 104th Avenue in Valdvere Park was about as far from Starbucks as you can get and lost 3 fish almost in the net before hooking one from the bike path bridge as time was running out. Unlike Clem Rinehart, the Carp Slam Event Chairman and former competitor, in an identical situation in a previous Carp Slam, Luke had a plan for getting to the water. What he didn’t plan on was falling into the 3 foot drainage ditch hidden by tall grass. As a true competitor he didn’t lose tension in the line and the 22 1/2 inch carp was subdued into the net.

Sabrina Stratford gave the competition a measure of gender balance. Early in the contest she she scored a 17 3/4 inch rainbow trout near MileHigh Stadium. This fish was undoubtably the same one in the famous photo with Fred Miller. Alas, by some accident Ty Clifton happened upon a 22 inch rainbow in the afternoon in the same mile high beat. Could it have grown 4 1/4 inches over lunch at the Fuel Cafe ? Sabrina lost a monster carp in the afternoon at 104th Avenue which was probably the same carp that Luke Bever hooked under the chin and could not score because of the on-the-lips rule. Next year Sabrina will certainly get more break

4th Annual Carp Slam Raises $12k for Platte Restoration

Saturday Pro-Am

Friday’s draw brought 14 teams into the Pro-Am competition. Two of those teams were staked by Webmaster Cory Stansbury and a group of boosters, were in the running. Two time winner Rob Kolanda drew Bill Hanson who was thrust into the limelight when another Carp Slam birth kept Dzifa Glymin out of the event. A group of returning Colorado guides were itching to unseat Kolanda and prevent a three-peat.

Saturday dawned clear and bright. After check in and an appearance by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper the teams departed for the river. With flows at 280 cfs, the fish were harder to find. To say the carp were “selective” would be an understatement. All the teams sighted fish, but catching them was another thing altogether. The morning session ended with a 29” carp caught by Reynolds/Clark in first place and a nice 16” smally taken by Chris Crosby at South Unlimited. Congressman John Salazer and Jeff Shoemaker of Greenway Foundation addressed the crowd over a pasta and sausage lunch on efforts to enhance the metro Platte. Ashley Grosh presented a check on behalf of Wells Fargo for $6,000 dedicated to restoration projects.

The afternoon session was a challenge. The team of Luna/Beranto landed a 29” carp to match the winning score. Lots of alternate species were caught in the south beats. Most of those were smallmouth bass. The most unique scorecard was reported by the team of Anset and Aaron. They landed a 16” trout and a Snapping Turtle described as “big”. I was at a loss as to how to score the amphibian. Teams repaired to Fuel for BS and general anesthetic. Music was provided by Gary Morse and the crowd made short work of beers donated by Wynkoop Brewery. The final results were:

First Place- Phil Beranto (am)/ David Luna (pro) $1,000 Cash

Second Place – Justin Clark (am)/ Barry Reynolds (pro)

Third Place- Tony Kay (am)/ Chris Galvin (pro)

Sunday Open

Sunday’s format allowed two man teams to fish anywhere in the metro area.

Winners of the event were:

First Place- Tyler Kendrick/ David Luna

Second Place – Matt Nery/Kevin Nichols

Third Place- Barry Reynolds/Jake McKittrick

You don’t have to be competing to enjoy the event and support a great cause. Head down to the river to watch the competition or join us at Fuel Cafe for lunch. Then starting at 5:30 join us for the awards and afterparty featuring tall tales and a silent auction.

Last Friday I took the afternoon off to catch a carp. The water was perfect 110cfs in Englewood! The carp were easy to spot, happy as could be until… I made a cast. Then they were mad! Damn those carp are smart!

As of writing this post, the water is up to 400 cfs on the South Platte. What does that mean? It is carpin time. Get ready to catch a lot of fish and that carp numbers may be a little down from last year. That also means it is anybody’s game! Rob Kolanda didn’t win the year the water was up, so everybody has a chance!

We still have a few spots open. If you have some special clients that you want to sign up, let us know. We will make note if you sponsor somebody.

Make sure you have family and friends come to lunch. Mayor Hickenlooper will be speaking and we will have members of Wells Fargo in the house.

The awards party will be fun, with music from Gary Morse and FREE BEER from Wynkoop Brewers. Plus, some great silent auction items to buy.

Just a reminder, all sections of the Platte South of 144th are off limits. You can scout, you just can’t fish.
